What I Ate in the Swiss Alps
Of all the places I’ve visited, Switzerland is the only that left we truly breathless on so many occasions. It’s just picture-perfect, from the squeaky-clean roads, to the symmetrical architecture, the friendly peeps, the reliable transport system and so much more.
But of course, it’s also a very pricey place to vacation in, which makes eating out a little trickier. Nonetheless, don’t feel disheartened as there are plenty of options, from your average pub-style eateries, to extravagant Michelin-starred fine dining. As always, ask a local who’s more than happy to share their (honest!) advice.
We landed in Zurich and it being December, we had to eat out at a Christmas market food stall. Despite it being below crazy degrees, people were downing cold beers without a care in a world while attempting to defrost beside a communal outdoor fire – trés cool!
So we stopped at the Himalaya Burger stall – a well known brand in Swiss world we found out – with it’s cool ethic vibe. The Himalaya burger is served in freshly-steamed bread & filled with Swiss beef and sautéed vegetables. You may choose a yogurt or spicy sauce. This juicy & light burger truly is the perfect mix of East and West – and a warm welcome on that rather cold Zurich evening.
And if you’re Switzerland, you can’t not dive into a fondue. This is my husband’s least favourite thing ever, but he made an exception so that I could try it. If you’re going for cheese, a mix of gruyere and a milder cheese is perfect. I also suggest you take it with potatoes as it let’s “sickening” if you know what I mean. Potatoes clean your palate better than bread, so you’ll be able to withstand the cheesiness for longer!
Besides the cliché chocolatiers, there are also some fabulous bread makers. We bought this artsy loaf for a clean €5 a piece but it’s so intricate and decadent that you’ll feel like you’re having a special meal, even if it’s the good old loaf.
I’ll leave you with a few more pics of my little piece of heaven, where time seems to stand still and you’re engulfed in this tranquil, blissfully perfect paradise.
